The D-WCCMHA is committed to reducing the number of suicides which occur in our county through education, training, support and provision of resources.  VCE currently offers two Suicide Prevention trainings on a monthly basis.

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST)

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is a two-day, interactive workshop that provides practical training for caregivers seeking to prevent the immediate risk of suicide. Its emphasis is on suicide first aid, helping an individual who is at-risk stay safe and seek further help. Participants often include emergency service workers, counselors, teachers, social workers, clergy and mental health professionals. See VCE's Training Calendar for upcoming ASIST trainings.

VCE will coordinate multiple presentations of the ASIST training which is intended for persons working on the front lines with the public, including family, teachers, police, fire fighters, school social workers, et al.

A total of 12.0 CECs are available for Licensed Social Workers. Participants must arrive on time and remain in the training for its entirety for both days. Late arrivals and early departures will result in the deduction of awarded credits.

Suicide Prevention Clinical Core Competencies

Assessing & Managing Suicide Risk: Clinical Core Competencies for Mental Health Professionals (AMSR) is a one-day workshop that teaches essential core competencies that meet the needs of an entire spectrum of mental health professionals, including psychiatrist, psychologists, licensed counselors, and social workers. Participants will know how to elicit suicide ideation, behavior, and plans; make a clinical judgment of the risk that a client will attempt or complete suicide; and implement the principles of crisis management. For more information, contact Katrina Palmer at (734) 785-7705 ext. 7560 or by email at kpalmer@vceonline.org.

This program has been approved by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC), National Association of Social Workers (NASW), and the Michigan Social Work Continuing Education Collaborative for 6.5 CE Clock Hours.

The Suicide Prevention Resource Center is authorized to award 6.5 NBCC clock hours and 6.5 NASW CE contact hours.

The American Association of Suicidology (AAS) is approved by the American Psychological Association to offer continuing education for psychologists. AAS maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

Participants may receive 6.5 hours of APA CE credits.
