"After a year of study . . . the Commission finds that recovery from mental illness is now a real possibility. The promise of the New Freedom Initiative - a life in the community for everyone - can be realized."
The President, New Freedom Commission, 2003
Defining recovery for mental health, substance abuse and developmental disabilities the Detroit-Wayne County Community Mental Health Agency Community Planning Council adopted the following Consensus Statement:
"Recovery is a broad life journey that allows an individual to achieve his/her full potential with services and supports in the community of his/her choice."
Recovery is the foundation of service delivery in the Michigan community mental health system. The Michigan Department of Community Health has charged mental health providers, consumer leaders and other community stakeholders to work together to promote recovery-based service delivery models. To this end, the Detroit-Wayne County Community Mental Health Agency in partnership with MDCH and the Michigan Recovery Council is implementing the Michigan Recovery Center of Excellence to develop accessible pathways to recovery for individuals with mental illness.
