Direct Care Learning Series
Autism: Current Trends and Best Practices

with Sally Burton-Hoyle, EdD

Location: This training will be available through video-conference at five (5) locations.  The speaker will be at the LIVE Site: The Guidance Center's Center for Excellence.  The Broadcast Sites are: The Children's Center, Detroit; Lincoln Behavioral Services, Redford; Community Living Services, Wayne.

Time: 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (Early arrival is encouraged for sign-in and parking)

Learning Content:
  • Autism is a lifelong neurological disorder that impacts socialization, communication and behavior.
  • Persons with Autism may use their behavior as communication.
  • In supporting persons with Autism, it is important to understance that they experience the world through their sensory systems.
  • Persons with Autism can learn to navigate their world through the use of visual supports such as checklists, pictures, objects and technology.
  • Persons with Autism are people first!
Suggested participants: Peer Support Specialists, Child Care Workers, Mental Health Techs, Support Staff, Direct Care Workers; all staff who work within the organizations that provide services to CMH consumers, not limited to housekeeping, billing clerks, receptionists, parking lot attendants, club house advocates, supportive housing and employment specialists.
